In 1893, Mrs. M.C. Van Rensselaer of New York, a summer resident of Marion, MA, offered a cup in memory of her son, George Griswold Van Rensselaer. Races for the Van Rensselaer Memorial Cup, the oldest trophy presented at Beverly Yacht Club and one of the oldest in the United States, have been held annually since 1896. The Van Rensselaer Trophy is awarded to the winner of a pursuit race with staggered starts.
